Editorial Director, Host Communications

About the job

Airbnb is a mission-driven company dedicated to helping create a world where anyone can belong anywhere. It takes a unified team committed to our core values to achieve this goal. Airbnb's various functions embody the company's innovative spirit and our fast-moving team is committed to leading as a 21st century company.

The Host Communications Team serves as the “last mile” voice of Airbnb to the Host community in more than 60 languages around the world. We manage outbound communications, in global one- and two-way channels including email, push, in-product, our Host Resource Center, Community Center, and owned social channels.

As Editorial Director, you’ll report to the Head of Host Communications and hire and manage a team of writers, agencies, designers, producers, and content creators to oversee the content and creative and editorial vision for the Host Resource Center, which serves as the central publishing platform for all Host Communications. Your editorial vision and content strategy will extend to other key channels and touchpoints including in-product, social, and the Community Center. Editorial scope includes education-focused, tip-driven content that drives Host comprehension and success, as well as news-oriented content to ensure Hosts are kept aware of urgent and timely updates, including product/feature releases, trust-related policy updates, and company news.

We are looking for a strategic and creative leader who can cultivate and build a world class team as well as develop and oversee an editorial vision for Airbnb Hosts that includes not only publishing content across all owned channels but also curation of Host-facing content in and out of the Airbnb ecosystem. This includes but is not limited to: in-product and in-app messaging, Host influencer content, owned social content, email and newsletter content, and content published on partner platforms.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Own editorial vision for Airbnb’s Host Resource Center, ensuring Hosts have the information they need to be successful when they need it
  • Oversee and edit Host-facing content across Airbnb’s Host channels, on platform and off: the Host Resource Center, Community Center, Facebook leader groups and social channels, and more
  • Hire and manage a team of writers, creatives, producers and agencies
  • Write, edit, and curate compelling, clear content that’s actionable and informative for Hosts
  • Work with business and initiative owners to translate product/policy changes and other business decisions for a Host audience
  • Be an internal champion for the Host & advocate for them at every step
  • Drive voice/tone standards for all Host-facing communications, partner with marketing and brand on creative vision and standards
  • Create content frameworks, including style sheets, video treatments, and story guidelines for staff and contract writers/content creators to create compelling and impactful copy to drive action and engagement
  • Develop product-education assets and toolkits that are tailored toward various Host segments and include video assets
  • Build strong partnerships with content creators inside and outside the organization; identify opportunities for syndication, distribution, and content partnerships at Airbnb and beyond
  • Build and manage editorial calendar, implement and advocate for channel best practices and cadence

Requirements

  • 15+ years of relevant experience in writing, editorial, or creative leadership roles
  • Background in content marketing, B2B or tech writing, service journalism, corporate communications, and community building a plus
  • Creative and design sensibility a must: ability to create narratives that span different storytelling mediums including long-form editorial, short-form ad, and social copy, film, photo, data visualization, animation and illustration
  • Comfort and familiarity with handling real-time issue mitigation and “breaking” news; willingness to jump in on last-minute announcements or issues that crop up and handle them
  • Experience working with executives and corporate leaders; executive communications ghost writing experience a plus
  • Dot connector and strategist - experience building content partnerships, franchises, and syndication arrangements
  • Ability to translate complicated product features and complex community policies (reviews, fees, cancellation policies) into clear, compelling narratives
  • True partnership mentality—can dig into details to develop strategy before writing copy
  • Writing samples and/or a portfolio of work to share
  • Relationships with contract and freelance writers, designers, creative agencies and freelancers a plus
