Chief Engineer

As Chief Engineer, you a responsible for the effective management of all engineering and maintenance operations within the hotel and condo residences. This role is responsible for the development of the Engineering Team and staying ahead of compliance regulations and procedures, energy conservation and efficiency, and project management for building, hotel, and condo residences.

Hotel Overview: Fairmont Pittsburgh, a 4 diamond LEED certified luxury hotel, is located at the heart of Pittsburgh’s business, cultural and retail hub.  Fairmont Pittsburgh offers superb and distinctive guest services and accommodations in a luxury setting.

Summary of Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Director, Operations, responsibilities and essential job functions include but are not limited to the following:

  • Lead the Engineering Team in day to day maintenance operations of the hotel, including service standards, equipment schedules, and work schedules
  • A complete understanding of all building related systems (electrical, HVAC, plumbing, Life Safety, etc.) and equipment
  • Communicate with Housekeeping to coordinate and prioritize maintenance needs for guest rooms and public areas
  • Maintain the hotel’s guestroom product and public space
  • Hands on approach and leadership, actively involved in the maintenance of the facility
  • Develop strong relationships with building engineering responsible for M.E.P systems
  • Coordinate communication for all project work, construction, mechanical/electrical equipment, and risk management between residents, condo association, PNC, hotel and vendors/contractors
  • Champion & drive hotel ‘Planet 21 Team’ – promoting and furthering LEED values
  • Complete purchase orders for all maintenance/vendor quotes and invoices
  • Assist hotel or condo common area project with coordination of renovation bidding, defining the cost and scope of the project, and overseeing the general contractor and subcontractors to ensure quality work is performed cost effectively
  • Identify and introduce environmentally friendly systems and equipment
  • Coordinate preventative maintenance for all areas and equipment including  guestrooms, kitchens, public areas, MEP, back of house/colleague areas
  • Build strong rapport with Royal Service to ensure data capture of maintenance requests and work orders and to ensure efficiencies and communication through the dispatch process
  • Prepare capital repair/maintenance budgets annually for Engineering
  • Ensure good relationships are built with internal and external vendors and building facility colleagues
  • Consistently offers professional, engaging and friendly service
  • Review daily reports, arrival, VIP, group and communicate all special requirements and monitor execution
  • Conduct regular leadership and colleague briefings and formal communication meetings
  • Advise all colleagues of established standards and procedures set out by the hotel and the department
  • Ensure performance management principles are instituted and followed
  • Review and update Business Continuity Plans annually and ensure operational teams receive proper training and refreshers
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Advanced knowledge of building management/engineering
  • Minimum 2 years progressive Engineering experience, preferably in a luxury property
  • A degree in Engineering or similar preferred

  • Previous experience of facilities management

  • Budgeting and accounting knowledge

  • Proficient, at an advanced level, with computers and relevant computer programs

  • Electrical, plumbing and HVAC knowledge is required

  • Hands on management style with ability to lead through example

  • Hands on Mechanical skills and aptitude

  • Experience with residential associations a plus

  • Strong organizational skills

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with great oral and written communication ability

Physical Aspects of Position (include but are not limited to):

  • Requires extended periods of standing and walking throughout shifts, as well as medium to heavy lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling of objects.
Visa Requirements: Must have proof of valid U.S. work authorization.
