JOB SUMMARY:

The Skiff Captain is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of small vessels, primarily skiffs, used for various marine activities. This role requires a strong understanding of local waterways, navigation, and safety procedures. The captain will ensure the safety of all passengers and crew while managing the vessel during operations, including transport, and other marine-related tasks.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Vessel Operation:
    • Safely operate and navigate skiffs in various marine environments, including nearshore, and inshore waters.
    • Plan with Dispatcher, Harbor Master, and Marine Operations Manager to execute trips based on weather, tides, and other environmental conditions.
    • Ensure the safe embarkation and disembarkation of passengers, equipment, and cargo.
  2. Safety and Compliance:
    • Maintain full compliance with all maritime regulations and company policies.
    • Conduct pre-trip safety checks, including inspections of life jackets, first aid kits, fire extinguisher and communication equipment.
    • Lead safety briefings for passengers and crew, ensuring everyone is aware of emergency procedures.
  3. Maintenance and Upkeep:
    • Perform routine maintenance on the skiff, including engine checks, hull inspections, and minor repairs.
    • Ensure the skiff is clean, well-maintained, and ready for use at all times.
    • Report any mechanical issues or damages to the Marine Supervisor promptly.
  4. Crew and Passenger Management:
    • Supervise and manage crew members, ensuring they perform their duties effectively and safely.
    • Provide excellent customer service, ensuring a positive experience for all passengers.
    • Assist passengers with boarding, disembarking, and handling of personal equipment.
  5. Operational Support:
    • Support various operations such as research, surveying, or transportation, depending on the mission of the trip.
    • Assist with the deployment and retrieval of equipment as needed.
    • Collaborate with other team members to ensure smooth and efficient operations.
  6. Documentation and Reporting:
    • Maintain accurate logs of trips, including details on weather conditions, equipment use, and any incidents or issues.
    • Prepare and submit required reports to the Marine Supervisor or Operations Manager.
    • Keep records of maintenance performed and any repairs needed on the vessel.


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Education: High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience: Minimum of 2 years of experience operating vessels up to 35’; experience in local waters preferred.
  • Certifications: Valid Captain’s License (A2 or Higher), First Aid/CPR certification, and any other relevant maritime certifications.
  • Skills:
    • Strong boat-handling and navigation skills, particularly in small vessels.
    • Knowledge of local waterways, tides, and weather patterns.
    • Ability to perform basic maintenance and troubleshooting on small boat engines and equipment.
    • Strong communication and leadership skills.
    • Ability to work in a team and provide excellent customer service.


WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • This role involves working in outdoor marine environments, often in varying and sometimes challenging weather conditions.
  • The position may require long hours, including early mornings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Physical demands include lifting heavy objects, standing for extended periods, and operating in potentially rough waters.
