Animal Care Specialist - Land Animals (Full-Time)

Specific Duties and Responsibilities
  • Work with a variety of exotic land mammals and reptiles ranging from small birds to pythons to giraffes.
  • Monitor the appearance and health of the animals.
  • Speak to guests and educate them about the animals. Answer questions and host live training sessions.
  • Perform entry-level training techniques with the animal under the direction.
  • Demonstrate mastery with assessing animal behavior and training techniques.
  • Routinely clean animal enclosures and compounds.
  • Prepare animal diets multiple times throughout the day.
  • Maintain accurate log of animal health, behaviors, enrichment, and diet.
  • Learn show scripts and perform in shows as assigned.
  • Adhere to all federal and state guidelines, regulations, and laws.
  • Assist in animal moves and transport operations.
  • Assist in research projects.
  • Maintain communication with Supervisors and other disciplines within the Animal Care Departments.
  • Follow all policies and procedures of Six Flags Discovery Kingdom and the Animal Care Department.
  • Participate in the inter- and intra-departmental cross training program.
  • Perform all other duties as required.


Reporting Structure

  • Reports directly to the Discovery Theatre Supervisor.


Skills and Qualifications

  • Minimum 1 year of experience handling or keeping exotic land animals.
  • Ability to be mentally alert, have quick reflexes, and react quickly to changing animal situations.
  • Availability to work varied shifts including weekends, evenings, and holidays in varied weather conditions required.
  • Duties and tasks may involve standing, walking, bending, and lifting up to 50lbs. Position is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and outside weather conditions.
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, duck, crawl, climb stairs and ladders, and work at heights with fall protection.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Will be required to work indoors and outdoors in extreme weather conditions including cold and heat.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and be able to operate vehicles (including but not limited to forklifts, golf carts, cars, trucks).
  • Must be able to work with chemicals and follow MSDS.
