The Director, Financial Systems, is a role performing two main functions:
  • Leadership/Strategic enhancements to drive future value and efficiencies by aligning the Financial System, data and strategies across and between Segments
  • Operations/Execution Optimization which drives improved efficiency and effectiveness by governing and leveraging existing resources and systems to support finance function
This role will support multiple business areas and maintain all supported processes and systems alignment between Controllership, Operational Finance and Information Technology needs. This specific position will be located in Burbank/Glendale, CA, and will support the Burbank based Segment Areas of: Walt Disney Studios, Disney Consumer Products & Interactive, Disney ABC Television Group (DATG) and the Corporate Controllership.

The Director is accountable for the performance and results of the multiple teams within their Hub. He/she must insure they execute functional business plans and contributes to the development of functional strategy. Decisions are guided by functional strategy and priorities. The ideal candidate for the Financial Systems Director role must demonstrate leadership experience and have the proven ability to envision the impossible, harness the creative power of the Company, lead with a global mindset, demand excellence of people and product, lead so that people choose to follow and demonstrate deep personal character and optimism. The role reports directly to the Executive Director, Financial Systems, Burbank/Glendale Hub. Responsibilities Strategy – 50%
  • Defines and drives long term strategy for Financial Systems and related processes
  • Serves as a strategic business planning partner working with business units (within each Segment and across the Enterprise) and IT to formulate enhancement options to address specific functional issues / requirements
  • Stays current on business issues, industry trends and technological advances
  • Represents Segment Finance and Accounting in Enterprise and Segment IT decisions for all systems carrying financial data across the individual Segments; the systems range from Front of House Revenue and Expense systems to the Enterprise-wide SAP ERP system (Over 150 systems)
  • Leverages system and process synergy opportunities across functions and businesses
  • Makes decisions for multiple clients
    • Develops strategy for analyzing metrics to identify trends, process/system opportunities and recommends corrective action
    • Decisions are guided by precedent and made mainly with reference to existing policies
    • Decisions are typically related to quality standards, people/services/ financial/equipment resources, project approach, and tactical operations for the division.
  • Guided by functional strategy, impacts results of part of a function, division or region or facilitates the work done by other functions by providing support to impact the business
  • Operates within the framework of mid- and long-term objectives
  • Translates mid- and long-term clients goals into operating objectives
  • Applies broad industry and commercial awareness to drive financial and operational performance across sub-function
Project Management – 25%
  • Partners with IT to drive system enhancements, upgrades and modifications across multiple process areas and segments; ensures architecture supports business requirements
  • Manages multiple large or small, complex or straightforward, projects covering multiple process areas.
  • Leads the design, resource management, implementation and support of finance system solutions for each Segment and the Enterprise
    • Effectively communicates with executives, management, stakeholders, subject matter experts and project team members.
    • Assists in developing project infrastructure for team (i.e. templates, project management methodology and execution)
    • Approves the project plans with specific goals, strategy, staffing, scheduling, identification of risks, contingency plans and allotment of resources for each phase of the project.
    • Directs and coordinates activities of project personnel to ensure project progresses on schedule
    • Monitors project results against objectives, milestones and scope.
    • Oversees solution testing, training and communication.
    • Obtains project signoff at completion
Leadership – 20%
  • Promotes teamwork both internally and externally
  • Makes sound business decisions that balance competing priorities
  • Manages activities of two to five departments/teams. Exercises supervision in terms of costs, methods and staffing
Process Support and Governance – 5%
  • Directs the resolution of highly complex or unusual business problems applying advanced analytical thought and judgment
    • Receives assignments in the form of objectives and determines how to use resources to meet schedules and goals
    • Critically reviews information, thinks through structure and analysis with its component parts including site/segment impacts identifying gaps and strategic solutions
    • Recommends changes to policies and establishes procedures that affect immediate organization(s)
Basic Qualifications
  • Minimum of 10 to 15 years work experience with financial or accounting, preferably in a large SAP installation
  • Minimum 10 years (preferred) of staff management experience
  • Experience working for large company and within a matrix
  • Must possess strong quantitative and analytical skills combined with solid business and financial acumen
  • Established expertise in financial operations, financial controls, GAAP accounting, financial reporting, and financial systems
  • Experience in directing the accounting and reporting of a highly complex, diverse, international, multi-location financial organization
  • Demonstrates leadership experience and proven ability to think strategically, build relationships, communicate effectively, drive results, inspire creativity and innovation, champion change, build teams and exhibit professional excellence.
  • Excellent leadership skills with the ability to define a clear vision and motivate others to develop a high performing team
  • Possesses excellent project management skills that lead to efficient, effective, and successful execution of project plans
  • Proven ability to lead, integrate and manage work vertically and horizontally within TWDC Finance, Accounting and IT organizations
  • Proven track record of managing globally distributed teams of finance and technical people
  • Ability to deal effectively with ambiguity and can effectively work in both areas of details and strategy
  • Leads through subordinate managers of managers; executes functional business plans and contributes to the development of functional strategy
    • Leads and develops professional and managerial staff
    • Interacts with executives to address critical issues and set policy
    • Develops budgets, schedules, and performance standards for clients
    • Plan, manage and prioritize team’s workload/ad hoc projects
    • Tactical, broad based ability to recognize and develop talent
    • Review staff’s work
  • Demonstrated diplomatic courage and confidence with executive interactions especially in times of high change
  • Proven resilience to work in a dynamic industry and complex financial systems environment
  • Ability to positively confront issues and resolve conflict with sound judgment

Preferred Qualifications
  • CPA or CMA license, or equivalent
  • PMP or other professional project management certification
  • Six Sigma certification
  • Experienced in using the Microsoft Office applications (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio, Project)
  • Experience in using SAP or another ERP
  • Experience in using Business Warehouse, Business Objects and/or Cognos reporting tools
  • Experience implementing financial processes and systems
  • Experience using systems designed to manage issues, changes and testing (e.g. Service Manager, Rational Team Concert, ALM)
Required Education
  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, Information Technology, Business or equivalent working experience
Preferred Education
  • Graduate degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, Information Systems, or a related field (e.g., MAC, MBA, MIS)
