The Manager of Systems Engineering will be responsible for managing a team of high performing systems engineers, supporting a variety of complex data warehouse and data platform systems, infrastructure and applications for The Walt Disney Company. This person is responsible for clearly communicating a vision to the team that defines the team’s purpose, ownership, contribution and commitment to Disney excellence, and a business-enabling DevOps culture. This person directly oversees, mentors and develops systems engineers on technical leadership, agile project management, design engineering, architecture, problem analysis, customer service, optimization and collaboration.
In addition, this role will be responsible for technical analysis, cost and effort estimation, production environment platform/system design, architectural fit and compliance, resource schedules, delivery milestones, collaboration with other Systems Engineering managers, and overall production environment quality. This person will lead a team of engineers in a fast paced dynamic environment. The manager of Systems Engineering reports to a Sr. Manager of Systems Engineering with responsibilities including career management and setting the operational direction for areas of ownership.
The ideal candidate will have several years of team management experience and will possess exemplary leadership and communication abilities (both verbal and written). This role will partner closely with business and technology leadership in delivering systems which meet and exceed business objectives. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are an absolute must with a demonstrated ability to work well with engineering teams, application and development groups including the ability to thoughtfully present to senior executives.
Basic Qualifications
  • Equivalent experience in technical operations or software engineering
  • Detailed knowledge of core internet protocols including, but not limited to TCP/IP, DNS and HTTP
  • Excellent written and verbal communications, proven ability to develop and deliver presentations geared for Senior and Executive Management
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills and proven experience managing teams in highly matrixed organizations
  • Understanding of advanced scripting and programing languages such as Python, Ruby, or JAVA
  • Experience with data applications and platforms
  • Understanding of configuration management frameworks such as Chef, Puppet, Ansible
  • Experience with managing multiple hosting environments including public and private cloud solutions
Preferred Qualifications
  • 7 years of experience leading multiple or cross functional engineering teams responsible for supporting and deploying internet based products or services and
  • 3-5 years of hands on previous experience developing or supporting enterprise online products and services
  • Experience with data applications and platforms such as Hadoop, HANA, Redshift, Tableau, Informatica, etc.
  • Proven experience managing software development lifecycle platforms and tools
  • Working knowledge of advanced scripting and programing languages such as Python, Ruby, or JAVA
  • Proven ability to manage budgets
