Job description

The Walt Disney Company (TWDC) is a leading international family entertainment business corporation with four main business segments – studios entertainment, theme parks and resorts, media networks, and consumer products and interactive. The Walt Disney Company (China) Limited (TWDC-China) is a wholly-owned subsidiary of TWDC operating in China. The principal business activities of TWDC-China include film distribution on cinemas, content distribution on traditional TV and digital platforms (including online and mobile), licensing of IP on consumer products and games, as well as production of relevant local contents for the Chinese audience.
TWDC-China is now seeking a seasoned lawyer to handle and advise on projects, transactions and initiatives which involve multiple business segments in the Greater China region, and to develop, negotiate, revise and finalize all the related project and transactional agreements and documents. (An example of such projects and transactions would be a long term comprehensive license agreement of a myriad of contents and IP to a licensee and distribution platform in China.) He/she will also be asked to work on new or strategic projects for the Greater China region and assist with some M&A work with the Corporate Legal department in the US from time to time.
Whenever available, this new lawyer will have to take on work projects as required to assist other team members, miscellaneous contract drafting, corporate matters (such as internal corporate restructuring) and other legal matters from time to time assigned by supervisor.
  • Leading the negotiation and conclusion of multiple-business-segments and other new or strategic projects, transactions and initiatives in Greater China.
  • Providing legal support and strategic advice to the management and business teams pertaining to the projects, transactions and initiatives mentioned above.
  • Attending to other legal projects and assignments as may be requested by supervisor from time to time.
Basic Qualifications The successful candidate will have strong knowledge of PRC laws and regulations combined with extensive first-hand experience in practical enforcement and implementation. He/she must be able to negotiate effectively with external business parties, liaise effectively with government authorities and have a strong acumen and understanding of commercial issues and judgment call.
Knowledge and experience in content licensing (e.g. SVOD, TVOD and AVOD) and complicated transactions (such as M&A transactions) would be an advantage. Fluency in written and verbal Chinese and English is a must for this position.
  • Minimum of 7 years post-qualification experience in law firm or in-house legal department from a commercial law practice, media practice or IP licensing practice.

Required Education
  • Law degree from China or other recognized major jurisdictions (e.g. US, UK, Hong Kong, Singapore, Australia, etc.)
