The veterinary technician works with many partners within Animal, Science, & Environment at WDW (ASE).
The veterinary technician will work with a team of veterinarians, veterinary technicians, Animal Health staff, and Seas husbandry staff to provide excellent animal care and welfare. This person will work between 0 & 24 hours per week including holidays. This person’s responsibilities will include assisting with WDW animal procedures, participating in regulatory training, supporting environmental initiatives, keeping accurate animal records, maintaining and cleaning equipment, performing lab tests, and fostering a safe, professional, respectful work environment. This person will also participate in guest interactions by partnering with teams at both the Seas with Nemo & Friends and at Disney’s Animal Kingdom to inspire guests to protect wildlife and support conservation.
This position reports directly to the Aquatic Animal Health Manager and is expected to perform all duties listed below under the direction, guidance, or instruction of the Leaders, veterinarians, and fellow veterinary technicians.
The primary responsibilities include but are not limited to assisting with various aspects of the Animal Health Team’s operation:
  • Veterinary technicians Monitor patients under Anesthesia
  • Provide intensive care to patients, formulate, prepare and dispense medication as ordered by staff veterinarians
  • Proficient at collection, handling, processing of diagnostic samples from all species
  • Perform radiography
  • Proficient in performing laboratory testing (including WBC counts/estimates, RBC counts, and differentials)
  • Required to set-up & maintain all medical related equipment (including endoscopic equipment, ultrasound equipment as well as video recording, saving images to storage program)
  • Administer treatments to patients
  • Keep accurate electronic medical records and the ability to become proficient in ZooMR program
  • Participate in inspiring educational presentations for guests regularly
  • Ensure all Animal Health Team Areas are clean and “show ready” at all times
  • Participate in team projects to accomplish set goals
Basic Qualifications
  • Minimum of 2 years experience as a certified, licensed, or registered technician (non-domestic animals)
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Strong inter-personal skills
  • Moderate Computer skills (Word, Excel, Medical Records Systems, PowerPoint, SharePoint, etc.)
Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated Experience Interacting with the public and having good public speaking skills
  • Experience working in an aquarium and/or zoo setting
  • Recently demonstrated experience with aquatic animal blood differentials
Required Education
  • Graduation from an accredited veterinary technology school, Minimum 2 year program.
  • Certification in at least one state with the ability to become certified in Florida within 1 year
Preferred Education
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Marine Biology or Zoology
