Founded in 1963, the University of Applied Sciences of the Grisons (formerly known as HTW Chur) is a public university in the southeastern part of Switzerland. The institutes of higher education in Switzerland can be separated into two types having equal status but pursuing a fundamentally different educational goal: the traditional universities and the universities of applied sciences (UAS). The mission of the traditional universities is to perform theory-based research and instruction in the classical academic disciplines, whereas the universities of applied sciences focus on theory and practice-oriented research, instruction and training. The more intense supervision and smaller classes, thus higher ratio of lecturers to students, further differentiate the universities of applied sciences from the traditional universities.
