Your challenges

The Sensory Intern's primary focus will be assisting with screening and training an internal Descriptive panel. In addition, this experience will expose the Intern to a wide range of sensory methods that are available to assist the Sensory Manager in making great tasting Metro products in terms of sensory quality. Other activities include learning EyeQuestion software to generate ballots, taking focus group notes, conducting ongoing screening and training for new panelist.

The intern will assist the Sensory Manager & Expert with panel set-up, execution, analysis of results and report writing. Over time, the intern will take on more and more of the responsibilities until they can independently run a project on their own. During the 6 months, the Intern will have a research project and upon completion will present the results to the Sensory department in a Lunch and Learn session.

Product Development - provide support to the team of product developers on various project types ranging from concept, design, and production of new products. Aid Sensory experts in innovating new concepts and products, optimize existing products, and work with vendors/suppliers on existing and new products. Prepare products in small and large batches using our product development kitchen as and when required.

Sensory - provide support in executing sensory evaluation and internal testing from concept to end of product shelf-life. This includes assisting the sensory experts with test design and analysis. The student is expected to evaluate various products including dairy, meat fish, shellfish and vegan products to provide project support for all product categories.

Skill requirements

Basic understanding of research and development as it relates to food science. Highly motivated self-starter, proven people/project leadership throughout your academic and work career. Ability to work in an unstructured and structured environment, demonstrated ability to work in a results-oriented environment with challenges, ability to give/receive constructive feedback.

Qualification requirements

  • MS or PhD student in Sensory, Psychology, Behavioral Sciences, Statistics or related field:
  • Must be computer savvy with ability to create and modify Microsoft Word documents, Excel spreadsheets and PowerPoint presentations
  • Levels of degrees accepted are undergraduate, masters, or doctorate degree in one of the following disciplines: Food Science, Agriculture, Science, Sensory, Process Engineering, or Culinary.
  • Basic understanding of research and development as it relates to food science
  • Must follow direction and work independently:
  • Familiar with Food Handling, Safety and Sanitation practices
  • Ability to work on multiple projects at one time, follow instructions, flexible and detail oriented.
  • Must be willing to taste and smell chemicals, flavors and food products.
  • Must be self-directed with ability to ask questions, investigate, and follow-up.
  • Candidate must be an effective written and verbal communicator.
