The Indirect Tax group manages all sales and use tax compliance for The Walt Disney Company and affiliates. This generally encompasses approximately 400 returns on a monthly basis for several legal entities. This group is responsible for implementing and maintaining several indirect tax systems with a heavy focus system automation, data analytics and process improvement. The Indirect group is responsible for managing all sales and use tax audits and planning initiatives.

The Manager, Indirect Tax & Technology must demonstrate leadership experience and the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment. This position will have primary responsibility for managing sales tax technology tools, improving efficiency and effectiveness of tax processes by leveraging existing solutions and identifying and implementing new technology and/or process improvements where appropriate.

The ideal candidate will leverage internal self-audit and risk management skills to identify financial and operational risk and opportunities across all segments within The Walt Disney Company. The candidate will collaborate with external and internal business partners to recommend and implement solutions to mitigate issues identified.


Responsibilities
  • Serve as a strategic business partner working with segment Financial Systems teams, Shared Services teams, Business Process Managers and IT to address specific functional or systems issues and requirements that impact sales/use tax compliance.
  • Prioritize and manage a slate of overlapping indirect tax technology projects considering multiple finance and tax initiatives and/or requirements simultaneously.
  • Set appropriate goals and deadlines, managing resource requirements, establishing written project plans, regularly monitoring and communicating project status and seeing project through to completion.
  • Manage small to large scale technology projects involving multiple business unit partners from an indirect tax perspective.
  • Implement and maintain indirect tax automation and reporting tools (Vertex) with our ERP system (SAP), various Front-of-House (FOH) and e-commerce system implementations and upgrades.
  • Optimize tax systems to utilize recent software enhancements and capabilities.
  • Configure/customize tax systems to supplement out-of-the-box functionality.
  • Assess and improve process and data flow related to indirect tax automation initiatives.
  • Identify and communicate value propositions and project status to senior leadership, including those within tax and business partners.
  • Implement standardized reverse audit procedures which can be employed to identify items or services for which the company has overpaid or underpaid tax.
  • Based on results of reverse audit findings, investigate and identify refunds and/or deficiencies.
  • Recommend solutions, outline suggested courses of actions and implement solutions to correct errors going forward.
  • Develop and analyze reporting metrics to readily determine sales/use tax implications of company operations.
  • Oversee tax compliance processes by providing oversight of staff reconciliations, tax return preparations and timely submission of Sales, Use, General Excise, GST/HST and B&O Tax Returns as necessary.
  • Develop and motivate staff and provide them with leadership, counseling, and career guidance.
Basic Qualifications
  • 5 – 10 years, broad based sales and use tax experience
Technical Competence
  • Broad based sales/use tax compliance and audit experience
  • Innovative orientation with a proactive approach to collaboration and problem solving.
  • Deliverable-focused, strong work ethic, and the capability to handle multiple projects and stakeholders
  • Excellent analytical skills and the ability to independently identify and resolve issues
  • Understands cross functional impact and ability to build consensus with business partners
Systems & Technology Competence
  • Significant experience working with SAP and Vertex (or other third-party tax automation software)
  • Strong information technology skills: Microsoft Excel, MS Word, and PowerPoint
  • Project Planning and Management – Demonstrated superior skills around planning and management of a large scale compliance effort
  • Excellent communication skills with ability to frame communications appropriate to audience
Leadership
  • Demonstrated leadership qualities.
  • Technically competent, approachable, superior communication skills, exhibits a high level on enthusiasm and confidence.
  • Demonstrate professionalism through a positive and cooperative attitude; ability to work in a fast paced environment
  • Proven ability to lead teams and develop staff
Preferred Qualifications
  • Other Indirect Tax Experience a plus
  • Project Management experience, leadership role in a overseeing several tax technology projects
  • Proven spreadsheet application skills and other database, automation or business intelligence skills (e.g. VBA,
  • CPA, strongly preferred
  • Project Management Certifications (such as PMP)

Required Education
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics or equivalent.
  • Advanced Degree (e.g. Masters in Tax, JD, LLM)
