JOB SUMMARY

Public Relations, a function of Global Communications & Public Affairs (GCPA), is responsible for developing and executing a strategic, innovative, and integrated communications program that both drives the business and advances the company’s reputation through proactive and reactive external media relations campaigns and serving as a day-to-day strategist for internal business partners with frequent interaction and counsel to various top-level executives.

The Director, Public Relations is a role that will be responsible for the proactive storytelling of Marriott International’s efforts to enhance and expand guest loyalty through Marriott Bonvoy, to support growth of the company’s current and future innovation platforms such as its premium home rental offering Homes and Villas by Marriott International, and to increase awareness for Marriott’s digital and mobile technology as leading edge. In this role, the Director will work with business partners in the Loyalty, Marketing, Customer Experience, and IT/Digital departments as well as interact and support other departments as a contributor to multi-team projects. In addition to proactive planning and storytelling, the Director will be responsible for supporting business partners and the GCPA team handling reactive media inquiries that may have a potential impact on Marriott’s reputation.

This position will report to the Vice President, Public Relations.

Expected Contributions

The following are major areas of responsibilities for the Director, Public Relations:

  • Bring a fresh, differentiated perspective in developing and executing innovative, strategic public relations plans on an annual and/or project basis tapping into a wide range of tactics (e.g., media relations, events, thought leadership, emerging media) to expand coverage among targeted and aspirational media to reach new consumer and business audiences.
  • Introduce compelling storytelling and unique story angles that tap into cultural trends when developing PR plans as well as in composing media pitches, press releases and messaging and executive speaking narrativesnas well as for content production.
  • Integrate planning and execution with external marketing and business partners as required to take advantage as many communications channels as possible.
  • Serve as a primary communications spokesperson for the company’s Marriott Bonvoy loyalty program, premium home rental offering Homes and Villas by Marriott International, projects initiated by the Customer Experience team and IT/Digital/Mobile innovation.
  • Provide leadership and PR counsel as a member of multi-departmental teams to achieve stakeholder and project objectives.
  • Manage major communications initiatives, including coordinating the stakeholder approval process, working directly with senior company leaders and distributing PR materials through appropriate external and internal channels.
  • Serve as a primary proactive and reactive media contact and spokesperson for focus areas including building and maintaining strong relationships with business, travel, and relevant trade and consumer media as well as drafting, soliciting comments, and implementing responses to inquiries for company executives and spokespeople as needed.
  • Lead integration of PR projects globally to ensure alignment with continent and regional PR teams supporting focus areas through ongoing communications, presentations and drafting and distribution of PR materials (e.g., statements, press releases, pitches, Q&A, etc).
  • Lead, liase and/or coordinate PR planning and execution across GCPA teams, PR agency and among internal Marriott International departments and continent PR teams.
  • Advise senior executives, in preparation for media opportunities including interviews by drafting briefing documents, developing and drafting executive talking points and staffing executive media interviews.
  • Oversee the compiling and distribution of PR coverage reports for strategic plans and projects.
  • Develop and execute reactive communications plans to manage issues that could impact corporate reputation such as issues effecting loyalty members, consumers, corporate partners and for events that take place at Marriott International properties around the world, etc. working in support of the Vice President, Public Relations


   

  Requirements for Position:

Successful candidates should possess knowledge, attitude and experience as follows:

  • Takes an entrepreneurial approach to public relations and enjoys proactive media pitching and relationship building.
  • Minimum of ten (10) years’ experience as a proven PR professional, with strong media connections and demonstrated experience supporting consumer-facing brands whether within an organization or agency.
  • Passion for developing successful pro-active public relations plans that break new ground focusing on innovative tactical execution to increase awareness.
  • A strong creative thinker in maximizing and/or going beyond traditional PR tactics to achieve business objectives.   
  • Track-record of generating strategic media placements in traditional and emerging lifestyle and business media.
  • Previous experiencing working with/or in brand or consumer marketing teams preferred, agency experience a plus.
  • Strong writing and editing skills (e.g., press statements and releases, messaging, talking points, strategic memos) that require minimal editing.
  • Wherewithal to work within multi-layered organizations and intricate subject matter in developing PR plans and articulating complex issues to media.
  • Understanding of the use of digital and social channels for advancing a media relations plan.
  • Highly defined, strongly honed, and successful interpersonal skills.
  • Self-starter and creative problem solver with excellent time management skills.
  • Ability to interface and work diplomatically with a wide range of individuals, including the highest levels of corporate management and business units within the organization, and handle all media sensitivities.
  • Superior judgment and use of discretion in protecting confidential information.
  • Outstanding presentation and oral communication skills with proficiency in drafting presentations.


Education : Bachelor's degree required, preferably with a concentration in Communications, Journalism, English, or Marketing. MBA a plus.
