Job Summary
 

Functions as the property’s Strategic Financial Business Leader.  As a member of the executive committee, the Controller champions, develops and implements hotel-wide strategies that deliver products and services to meet or exceed the needs and expectations of the target customer and property associates.  The position provides the financial expertise to enable the successful implementation of the brand service strategy and brand initiatives while maximizing the return on investment to the owners and PCH.  In addition, the Director of Finance creates and executes a business plan that is aligned with the hotel and brand’s business strategy and focuses on the execution of financial and accounting activities and the delivery of desirable financial results.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Leads the development and implementation of a comprehensive annual business plan which is aligned with the company’s and brand’s strategic direction, improves profit growth in operating departments and demonstrates a commitment to meeting the needs of all key stakeholders.
  • Collaborates with Operations and Revenue Managers to develop effective revenue management strategies and set aggressive goals that will drive the property's financial performance.
  • Participates in sales strategy and revenue management meetings and uses financial expertise and analytical models to evaluate mix of transient and group revenue and provide pricing and inventory recommendations that increase market share and attain revenue growth and profit goals.
  • Provides on going analytical support, e.g., monitoring the operating department’s actual and projected sales and coaches management team to ensure revenue goals are met and opportunities are identified and addressed.
  • Effectively manages property working capital and cash flow in accordance with PCH SOPs and owner requirements.
  • Identifies key projects and manages associated Capital Expenditure funds for implementation of brand initiatives, product improvement and increased revenue potential.
  • Uses financial analysis, data trends and market information to anticipate needs, identify operating/financial issues and recommend actions to maximize financial return.  Highlights trends that are likely to shape the wants and needs of internal and external customers of the future; leads the organization in exploring business opportunities that create value for the customer while driving profit.
  • Identifies opportunities to increase profits and create value by challenging existing processes, encouraging innovation and driving necessary change.  Openly shares own viewpoints even when they may be unpopular and encourages others to do so.  Leverages strong functional leadership and communication skills to influence the executive team, the hotel's strategies and to lead own team.
  • Advises the GM and executive committee on existing and evolving operating/financial issues and protects and strengthens our competitive advantage by advocating and supporting sound business and financial decision making.
  • Communicates financial concepts in a clear and persuasive manner that is easy to understand and drives desired behaviors.
  • Leverages technology and effectively uses information systems and tools to generate financial reports and provide managers with analytical support to drive decision-making.
  • Creates the annual operating budget for the property and provides analytical support during budget reviews to identify cost saving and productivity opportunities for property managers.
  • Analyzes financial data and market trends and produces accurate forecasts that enable operations to react to changes in the business and facilitates critique meetings to review information with management team.  Provides property and corporate recipients with forecast information in a timely manner.
  • Puts in place appropriate controls to manage business risks.  Ensures a strong accounting and operational control environment to safeguard assets, improve operations and profitability.  Ensures compliance with standard and local operating procedures (SOPs and LSOPs).
  • Champions the use of technology to create operational efficiency.  Oversees the acquisition and maintenance of property based systems.
  • Monitors systems to ensure accuracy of data (e.g., outlet menu prices) and support the achievement of revenue goals.
  • Oversees internal, external and regulatory audit processes and ensures compliance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Analyzes ROI capital projects prior to committing funds and upon completion determines if anticipated results were achieved.
  • Reconciles balance sheet and ensures account balances are supported by appropriate documentation in accordance with SOPs.
  • Ensures that the P&L is accurate (i.e., costs are properly matched to revenue, costs are recorded in the proper accounts) and statements are delivered to appropriate individuals in a timely manner.
  • Effectively leverages centralized accounting processes and shared services.
  • Ensures tax rates used for sales/use tax are current and proper amounts are collected and/or accrued.  Oversees the payment of real estate/personal property taxes and if applicable holds in funded escrow accounts.  Ensures tax exempt transactions are appropriate and properly documented.
  • Reviews audit issues and ensures appropriate corrections are made.
  • Serves as a liaison between corporate, property and insurance carrier when claims are filed.
  • Manages through people and reliable systems and processes and assigns team members and other department managers' clear accountability backed by appropriate authority to accomplish goals.
  • Hires diverse, Finance leadership team members who demonstrate strong functional expertise and entrepreneurial leadership to meet the business needs of the operation.
  • Ensures new hires participate in the department’s orientation program and receive the appropriate new hire training to successfully perform their job.  Ensures team members are cross-trained to support successful daily operations.
  • Creates appropriate development plans and develops team members based on their individual strengths, development needs, career aspirations and abilities.  Ensures the same is done for all managers in Finance.
  • Sets goals and expectations for direct reports using the performance review process and holds staff accountable for successful performance.  Coaches team by providing specific feedback to improve performance.  Conducts annual performance appraisals with direct reports according to Standard Operating Procedures.
 
Job Requirements
 

Education or Certification

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration or related field required
  • 3-4 years of previous accounting and finance management experience preferably in a hotel finance environment
  • Previous Assistant Director of Finance experience is preferred
