ResponsibilitiesThe Walt Disney Company categorizes its analytics efforts into the following areas:
Business / Data Analytics:
Analysts query and summarize data through aggregations, averages, comparisons, year-over-year differences, etc. They use their analyses to build stories that inform business decisions and perform fundamental predictions on the data. Responsibilities can include developing prototype solutions, reports and dashboards, as well as creating robust analytics to support insights and the visualization of complex data sets.
Consumer Insights:
Consumer Insights practitioners interpret trends in human behaviors, aiming to increase effectiveness of a product or service. Specifically, Consumer Insights is a field that, as the voice of the consumer, focuses on analyzing market research and acting as a bridge between research and marketing. Practitioners in this space provide understandings that leads to marketing on a more direct and personal level.
Data Modeling (Data Science):
Data Modelers leverage the advanced analytics tools at their disposal to help glean even deeper insights from data and make predictions. They create, test and validate models to best predict the probability of an outcome (predictive modeling) and are familiar with practices such as machine learning and various statistical methods (e.g., linear regression, generalized linear models, longitudinal data analysis, categorical data analysis, spatial data analysis, time series).
Decision Science:
The practice of Decision Science adds two additional elements to the role of the Data Modeler. The first is a research component that strives to develop new modeling methods and algorithms that can more appropriately solve for certain business issues than existing advanced analytics tools can. The second is an optimization component, where specific algorithms are used to take results from statistical models and forecasts and find the business decision that is optimal. In short, Decision Science is the analytics layer of creating something that doesn’t exist!
