Insight Look: 2018 Receptionist of the Year Award

by | INSPIRATION

The International Association for Front Office Managers and Assistant Hotel Managers (AICR) was founded in the Cote d’Azur in France in 1964. Since then, they have worked closely with hotels, tourism associations, and other hospitality institutions from all countries and regions noted for hotel or tourism activity. Now, after more than 50 years, the AICR matured into a dynamic international organisation represented in 16 countries and 17 sections; and it continues to grow!

With the intention to encourage the best practices right at the front of the hotel industry, every year they run the Receptionist of the Year competition. The contest consists of various stages where participants’ skills are put to the test through different tasks and role-play scenarios. The winner receives the honorable David Campbell Trophy, in acknowledgement of their dedication and passion for the industry. The competition grows in strength every year and has gained the respect of hoteliers around the globe.

This year, the organisation welcomed front office managers, hotel managers, and many others to the Baur au Lac Hotel in the beautiful city of Zürich, Switzerland. Sixteen candidates from around the world - including Austria, Australia, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Spain, Estonia, Germany, Italy, France, Poland, Qatar, Singapore, Dubai, and the United Kingdom - presented themselves in front of a jury to compete for the most honorable front desk award. Our very own Marion Amacker, Head of Hosco Talent Search, was one of the experts that evaluated the competitors’ abilities to deal with the different challenges they had to face.

Watch the video above for an exclusive Hosco inside look at this year’s competition and winner: Valentina Ventura! She works as a receptionist at the 5-star hotel Aldrovandi Villa Borghese in Roma, Italy. What drove her to the competition this year? Valentina tells Hosco: "What brought me here is my personality. I had the chance to show to the jury who I am, what I love to do, and why I love to work as a receptionist. For me, it's the best job in the world!"

Last year, Hosco interviewed Sofía Barroso, 2016 Receptionist of the Year. From her experience, to be an excellent receptionist you must be genuine, empathetic, and extremely passionate about hospitality. What she loves about her role is to be able to engage with guests and listening to their stories. She believes that just by working at a hotel you can travel through the multicultural interactions you have everyday.

Would you like to follow Sofía or Valentina’s steps? If you share their passion, working as a Front Office Receptionist might be the perfect career path for you.
