The Impact of this Role

The Director of Engineering acts as a Brand Guardian in all areas related to Design & Project Services and Engineering, and ensures that the Brand Design Philosophy and Standards are maintained through detailed design reviews as well as giving guidance to all key consultants, as well as hotel operating teams. This role provides design, operational and brand direction for assigned projects from kick-off meeting through to project completion and hotel opening. Supporting the hotels after the opening and working with hotel engineering teams to ensure the systems are operated effectively and efficiently, and the building and equipment are maintained regularly with strong emphasis on sustainability are among other important tasks of this role.

Key Responsibilities

Design and Product Standards

  • Overall responsibility is to assist Vice President – Engineering, Sustainability and Security to ensure all new-build hotels and to-be-renovated hotels in the Americas region are designed and constructed according to the Design Standards of the RWHG, especially related to the Building Systems including Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, Fire and Life Safety, Security, and Extra Low Voltage (ELV) Systems (i.e. Audio Visual, Guestroom Control Systems, SMATV & Building Monitoring system, Communications Technology etc.)
  • Provides advice and comments on the drawings, specification, programme and any technical related documents through the design process.
  • Conducts site inspections and attends design meetings regularly.
  • Ensures regulatory compliance to facility regulations and safety standards.
  • Interacts with engineering associates, owners, internal (other departments) and external customers (city building/ zoning department, fire prevention bureau etc.), vendors, consultants and RWHG team members.
  • Co-ordinates with the project manager, architect, interior designers, M&E consultants and other specialists to ensure the hotel RWHG M&E requirements will be adhered to.
  • Collaborates with DPS team and assists Vice President – Engineering, Sustainability and Security to update the design standards and new manuals with the engineering design best practice, state-of-the-art technology application, sustainability, and enhancement on E&M system reliability and maintainability.


Development

  • Assists in potential project technical reviews and PIP reporting.
  • Assists in property takeover/conversion related due diligence activities.
  • Spearheads sustainable design initiatives in new build projects and works closely with the project team.


Pre/Post-opening Support

  • Attends testing and commissioning activities, where possible, and assists hotel engineering teams during hotel handover stage.
  • Attends the simulation test of Fire and Life Safety systems during hotel handover stage.
  • Provides advice on all aspects of engineering support, environmental controls and the operational efficiency of the property.
  • Assists operating hotel engineers with guidance on engineering design matters and troubleshooting of technical matters.
  • Guides hotel engineering teams on new building technology, and their retrofit projects.
  • Assists Vice President of Engineering and Senior Corporate Director of Engineering in introducing and following up on various engineering initiatives and programs.


General

  • Always stays up to date with changing building technology and design solutions, especially with regards to energy efficiency and sustainability.
  • Attends conferences and trade shows, as applicable.
  • Helps organize regional/corporate engineering meetings and presents as necessary.
  • Travels to project sites when needed.
  • Is a “Brand Ambassador” at all times and ensures brand integrity and clarity are always maintained.
  • Models the Company’s culture, vision, mission and core values at all times.

Critical Skills & Qualifications.

Required Skills

  • Knowledge of building trades: Fire and Life Safety, Electrical, Mechanical, HVAC, Plumbing, Building Controls and General Building.
  • Knowledge and experience in hotel project planning and design.
  • Design experience on hotel Mechanical and/or Electrical Systems
  • Knowledge of facility regulations and safety standards (OSHA, EPA, ADA, NEPA).
  • Knowledgeable of USGBC’s LEED certification process.
  • Ability to travel to international locations for site visits, meetings, and pre/post opening activities
  • Good command of both oral and written English.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Building Services or Architectural Engineering.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or Chartered Engineer (CE) certification is desirable.
  • LEED AP BD+C credential is desirable.
  • Fluency in written and spoken Spanish language is desirable.


Experience

  • Minimum 5 years of hotel MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing) design experience.
  • Experience in the hotel business is desirable.

The salary range for this position is $130,000 - $138,000. This is the pay range for this position that the company reasonably expects to pay. This position also may be eligible for bonuses. Decisions regarding individual salaries will be based on a number of factors, such as experience, type of experience, location, and education.
