Chef

We are looking for an experienced and motivated chef to join our team at Vöruhúsið, a busy restaurant located in Vestmannaeyjar, one of Iceland’s most unique island communities.

We are looking for someone who enjoys working in a fast-paced professional kitchen and understands the importance of speed, quality, consistency and teamwork.

About the position

Our kitchen can get very busy, particularly during peak service, so you need to be comfortable working quickly and efficiently under pressure while maintaining a high standard of food.

Good communication is extremely important to us. We are looking for someone who communicates well with coworkers, helps the team when needed and contributes to a positive working environment.

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

As a chef at Vöruhúsið, you will be an active part of our kitchen team and involved in both preparation and service.

Your daily responsibilities will include:

- Preparing ingredients and completing mise en place before service

- Cooking and preparing dishes according to our recipes and standards

- Working your station efficiently during busy lunch and dinner services

- Making sure dishes are prepared quickly, consistently and presented to a high standard

- Communicating clearly with other chefs and front-of-house staff during service

- Helping other stations and coworkers when needed

- Receiving and organizing food deliveries

- Monitoring stock levels and helping reduce food waste

- Following food safety, hygiene and HACCP procedures

- Keeping your workstation clean and organized throughout the day

- Cleaning the kitchen and equipment as part of the daily closing routine

- Helping with preparation for the following day

- Taking responsibility for your work and contributing to a positive and professional kitchen environment

This is a hands-on position in a busy kitchen, so we are looking for someone who enjoys working at a good pace, stays calm under pressure and understands the importance of teamwork and communication.

Vöruhúsið is located in Vestmannaeyjar (Westman Islands), a beautiful island community just off the south coast of Iceland.

The main island, Heimaey, has a population of around 4,500 people and offers everything needed for everyday life, including supermarkets, shops, cafés, restaurants, a gym, swimming pool, sports facilities and healthcare services.

Vestmannaeyjar is known for its spectacular nature, mountains, volcanic landscape, ocean views and one of the world's largest puffin colonies. Despite being a small community, the town has an active social life and becomes especially lively during the summer months.

Getting to the mainland

A regular ferry connects Vestmannaeyjar with Landeyjahöfn on the south coast of Iceland. The ferry journey takes approximately 35–40 minutes.

From Landeyjahöfn, it is approximately:

- 30 minutes to Hvolsvöllur

- 45–60 minutes to Selfoss

- Around 2 hours to Reykjavík, Iceland's capital

There are also domestic flights between Vestmannaeyjar and the Reykjavík area when available.

• Culinary education is an advantage, but strong professional kitchen experience is equally important to us.
