What you will learn

Work experience: your passport to success Tourism employers tell us that candidates with work experience have the edge when applying for graduate positions. The BA (Hons) International Tourism Management features exciting opportunities for placements and summer internships, where you can gain high quality practical experience and receive mentoring from respected industry professionals. Our students have honed their professional skills not only with local tourism, leisure and arts organisations but also with hotels, tour operators and tourism bodies in locations as far afield as New York and Tanzania. If you are taking the four-year course, a formal industry placement lasting nine to 12 months is compulsory between your second and final year. You normally work as a paid employee. While placements are not compulsory on the three-year course, we support you to gain invaluable experience during your summer vacation, either in paid or voluntary roles. You may even find that a successful placement leads directly to a job offer, for example, whilst studying one of our students Fatou Jammeh undertook a three-month internship with the Gambian Tourist Board and was offered a permanent role there ready for when she graduated. Meet leading local, national and global employers You will benefit from our collaborations with major tourism industry names, paving the way to employer-led projects, placement opportunities, insight visits and inspirational guest lectures. Our range of partners from the public, private and voluntary sectors reflects both the local and international nature of this course. We liaise closely with organisations such as Visit Peak District, the National Trust, Natural England, Chatsworth House, Haddon Hall and Tourist Information Centres. We have also forged links with the likes of Disney Resorts, USA Summer Camps, Salzburg Tourism, TUI Thomson, Merlin Entertainment, Monarch Airlines, British Airways and niche tour operators. Broaden your horizons with fieldtrips Regular fieldtrips offer ample opportunities to see tourism management in close-up – from airports and adventure parks to museums, galleries and stately homes. You could find yourself investigating audience engagement at high-profile festivals or learning how visitor access is managed in the countryside. Residential fieldtrips see our students head overseas too. Take the chance to study abroad We encourage you to take full advantage of our Go Places, Go Further scheme which gives you the chance to spend part of your course studying abroad. You will not only learn more about global citizenship but also view tourism management from a fresh perspective. Our thriving partnerships with international universities open doors for you to take part in fascinating projects overseas. You could develop rural tourism in Malta, run guided tours on the Flanders battlefields, promote the resorts on Lake Balaton in Hungary, or explore hotel management in the Netherlands - to name just a few opportunities. Hands-on tourism research We specialise in ‘learning by doing’ so you will work on live projects briefed by a range of tourism stakeholders. These build your research skills so you can investigate challenges within the industry and devise effective solutions. Our students have contributed to a professional audit which is helping the Victorian resort of Matlock Bath to refresh its image. They have also developed tours for school and college groups focusing on the behind-the-scenes commercial life at Chatsworth. Who is the course for?

How you will learn You will gain a solid foundation of applied managerial skills in the context of the tourism industry. Your subject knowledge will be developed through lectures, seminars, workshops, guided study, research and applied practice sessions. The course features a wide range of work-related learning such as guest speakers, conferences, industry days, networking events, competitions, challenges and employer-led industry projects. The industrial placement which forms part of the four-year course is structured, relevant and designed to improve your academic performance as well as boosting your employability. Our dedicated and well connected placement team will help you find just the right position to match your career aspirations and professional interests. Research-based enquiry is a cornerstone of this course. You will engage with industry, the local community and teaching staff to produce valuable findings for the benefit of the sector. In your final year, this culminates in an independent study or project on a theme of your choice. Many students draw on their work-related learning experience for their dissertation. Recent examples include marketing for Guernsey Tourism and supporting a rural tourism initiative at Cornwall’s Eden Project. Expertise to inspire you You will be taught by enthusiastic and supportive tutors with extensive experience and contacts within the industry as well as a strong record for influential academic research. Their interests span subjects such as adventure tourism, cultural tourism, the psychology of the visitor experience, e-tourism and rural regeneration through tourism. The team has undertaken investigations into issues as diverse as attitudes to disabled tourists and how to cultivate street art to improve the tourist offer in cities.
