About the job
The Deck Repairman is a skilled tradesperson responsible for overhaul, maintenance, and repair of deck machinery and equipment. This role may require independent work or as part of a team, handling verbal or written work orders and developing practical solutions to repair challenges. The position involves working in various deck areas and conditions, with a strong emphasis on safety, quality, and environmental standards.
Key Responsibilities
Perform overhaul, maintenance, and repair of deck machinery and equipment as directed by supervision.
Read and interpret work orders (verbal or written) and implement effective repair strategies.
Maintain awareness of safety procedures; wear appropriate PPE and follow safety instructions from the Bosun and 2nd Bosun.
Execute tasks in accordance with Safety, Quality, and Environmental policies and SQM guidelines; apply hot-work procedures where required.
Carry out tasks across different deck areas as needed and assist with related maintenance or repair work as assigned.
Report progress, issues, and potential improvements to supervisors; participate in safety drills and training as required.
Qualifications & Training
Basic safety training completed prior to employment.
Preferably some experience in deck repairs or related mechanical trades.
Ability to understand and follow mechanical drawings or instructions and to work safely in a marine environment.
Language Requirements
Ability to read and write in English to understand and interpret written work orders and safety procedures.
Ability to communicate clearly with supervisors and crew; effective interpersonal skills.
Physical & Environmental Requirements
Physical: Regularly perform manual labor; able to stand, walk, and use hands to manipulate tools; capable of lifting up to 50 pounds.
Vision: Adequate vision to read gauges, manuals, and work orders; depth perception for precise tasks.
Environmental: Work on board a vessel in various weather and sea conditions; exposure to noise, heat, and moving equipment; must wear appropriate PPE and be prepared for shift work or on-call needs; able to operate in confined spaces and at heights as required. Full use of arms, legs, vision, hearing, and communication abilities is expected to perform duties effectively.
